“A chocolate truffle is a type of chocolate filled with a chocolate ganache, It is named for its resemblance to the truffle fungus and this gives it a luxurious image, despite the fact that its ingredients are fairly basic: chocolate, cream, butter and sugar. Other ingredients such as brandy may be added, and it is traditional to dust each truffle with cocoa powder.
In recent years, it has become fashionable to give chocolate truffles or hot chocolate as wedding favors in place of the traditional Jordan almonds. There are several wedding supply stores that sell truffle boxes for chocolate truffle wedding favors, personalized with the name of the bride and groom and the date and time of the wedding.
Making Your Own Chocolate Truffle Wedding Favors
Whilst chocolate truffles are usually thought of as the preserve of the master chocolatiers of Europe, they are actually fairly simple to make. It is simply a case of melting the ingredients together in a pan, placing the mixture in a baking dish, leaving it in the refrigerator for an hour, using a melon baller to scoop out the truffles onto parchment paper and then putting the truffles back into the refrigerator for another half hour. Once suitably refrigerated, they can then be garnished with the aforementioned cocoa powder, chopped nuts, chocolate shavings or whatever else you fancy.
Turning your chocolate truffles into wedding favors is then simply a matter of finding the right packaging, either store bought or home made.
Buying Chocolate Truffle Wedding Favors
As well as selling the truffle boxes mentioned earlier, in both single and multiple sizes, wedding supply stores also sell the truffles themselves. They generally retail for around $1.50 to $2 each, and you can often get discounts for buying in bulk. The more you buy, the cheaper the unit cost of each truffle.
The stores also sell accessories such as monogrammed stickers and silver presentation trays for the truffles. Some stores sell the truffles and personalized ballotin boxes together as a packages, for a complete chocolate truffle wedding favor package.
Some suppliers sell trays of chocolate truffles. The trays are in large quantities such as 50, 75 or 100, and allow you to purchase lots of truffles relatively inexpensively, tough you still have to buy the individual boxes, velvet bags etc for the truffles, so it may not work out that much cheaper. If you are on a tight budget, one solution might be to buy plastic martini glasses from a party shop and put a truffle in each glass. It gives a stylish touch for just a few pennies.”
